Spatial correlation of broadband earthquake ground motion in Norcia (Central Italy) from physics-based simulations

Abstract This paper investigates the spatial correlation of response spectral accelerations from a set broadband physics-based ground motion simulations generated for Norcia (Central Italy) area by means SPEED software. We produce several ground-motion scenarios varying either slip distribution or hypocentral location as well magnitude to systematically explore impact such physical parameters on correlations. extend our analysis other components (vertical, fault-parallel, fault-normal) in addition more classic geometric mean highlight possible directionality and therefore identify specific features. Our analyses provide useful insights role heterogeneities relative position between hypocentre asperities correlation. Indeed, we found significant variability terms both range sill among considered case studies, suggesting that is not only period-dependent, but also scenario-dependent. Finally, results reveal isotropy assumption may represent an oversimplification especially near-field thus it be unsuitable assessing seismic risk spatially-distributed infrastructures portfolios buildings.
